– Editor’s Note: Veterans Today supports the rights and freedoms of all religions under the U.S. Constitution to exercise their chosen faith. We reject the Islamophobia reflecting nothing but a small reichwing, Judeo–Christian sect’s crusade against Islam. We strongly support and applaud President Obama who issued a statement today saying he has “no regrets” in defending the right of all Americans to freely exercise their faith.
The Jewish War Veterans of the USA is an unwavering advocate of guaranteeing every American’s individual rights, including the right to practice one’s religion [except Muslims].
The developers and adherents of the Islamic community center must have the courage and common decency to yield to the families of those who were murdered by the Jihadist terrorists.
However, with these individual rights comes the obligation of the adherents of each religion to respect the tenets, principles and practices of believers of other religions or concerns of other citizens.
It has become well known that there is a plan to construct a 13- story Mosque and Islamic community center only two blocks from ground zero in Manhattan, New York, the site of unbounded destruction, pain, and murder of innocent civilians by Muslim Jihadist terrorists on September 11, 2001.
The stated intent of the Islamic community is to advance the meritorious teaching of tolerance, respect, and the rejection of Jihadists in their midst, but, however admirable and pure this intent may be, the selection of the site near ground zero has invoked the opposite response, especially where pieces of the landing gear of the plane crashed through the roof and two stories of the building, and where a community center can provide for proselytization in a world financial center.
The Jewish War Veterans of the USA in Convention assembled unequivocally opposes the construction of an Islamic community center near ground zero.
