Why Would Jews Vandalize A Holocaust Memorial?

Matityahu Drobles, a Holocaust survivor and former member of Israel’s parliament, looks at anti-Zionist graffiti sprayed on the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial compound in Jerusalem, Monday, June 11, 2012. Vandals desecrated the memorial, its chairman said Monday, suggesting radical ultra-Orthodox Jews were to blame. (RNS) The news that Israel’s memorial to Holocaust victims had been grafittied in early June with bitterly anti-Semitic and anti-Israel statements was shocking.

More shocking still was the news that the three men arrested for the crime are Jewish.

How could Jews desecrate the memories of millions of fellow Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis?

The religious identities of the culprits — however surprising to many who read of their arrests last Tuesday (June 26) — did not surprise many Israelis, however. They know that a number of ultra-Orthodox Jews, for religious reasons, believe the State of Israel should not yet exist.

Among ultra-Orthodox Jews, this view is not uncommon. Many interpret passages in religious texts to mean that the messiah must arrive before the State of Israel is reconstituted.

What is uncommon is the willingness to make the point by defiling Yad Vashem, the Hebrew name for Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, a nearly sacred civic monument founded in Jerusalem five years after the 1948 establishment of the nation.

“Every religion has its fringe, but these people are the fringe of the fringe,” said Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom, a modern Orthodox synagogue in Washington, D.C. “They are very troubled individuals. It’s just very disturbing and these people represent nobody but themselves.”

Even Jewish groups that promote the idea that the establishment of Israel was a terrible mistake have denounced the vandals. The suspects are three men, ages 18, 26 and 27, who live in Israel and have confessed to the crime, according to police.

Among the statements they painted in Hebrew at the memorial: “If Hitler had not existed, the Zionists would have invented him” and “Jews wake up — the Zionist regime is dangerous.”

Yirmiyahu Cohen, a writer for True Torah Jews, a New York-based group of fervently Orthodox Jews who believe that the Jewish state contradicts Jewish law, said he personally knows the men arrested for the crime, and deplores their actions.

But Cohen also expressed an understanding of the sentiments expressed in their graffiti. “There were Zionists who were complicit in the Holocaust, because they stood by and refused to save Jews, knowing that the destruction of European Jewry would create a political climate conducive to the founding of a Jewish state,” he said.

Historians of Zionism point to numerous Zionist efforts to save Jews from the Nazis.

“Jews overwhelmingly believed until not so long ago that the establishment of the Jewish people to their homeland could only take place when the messiah comes,” Cohen said.

He pointed to a portion of the Talmud — ancient rabbinic commentaries on Jewish law — that states that before the messiah’s arrival, Jews must live in exile and should not use “human force” to establish their own nation.

But Herzfeld said that interpretation of the Hebrew Bible and the commentaries is simply “misrepresenting the Torah and the Talmud.”

Jason, you are a troll and not worthy of discussion. Everyone outside of your comfort zone is an “anti semite” Arabs are Semites. You are come off as an anti-intellectual chimpanzee. You should be ashamed of yourself with this “protection” of Jewish people by what you wrote. Ashamed. You obviously cannot do better so I do have a banana for you though, in case you get hungry “writing” your “response” Oooogah-Booogah and please shake a branch. That will alert me.

What’s the difference between rancid pond water surrounded by decaying rotten animal carcasses and a bunch of anti-Semites?

Let me get back to you.

The first tattooed prisoner numbers were introduced in 1940 and remained in use untill January 1945 ending with the number 402,499 – quite a few short of the vaunted 6,000,000 – plus figures for Jews alone – which did in fact include Slavs,Gypsies, and Police prisoners.

    @ Jason:

Is this the best that a Zionist shill can do when attempting to counteract material that puts Jews in such a bad light?I suspect that you are either totally ignorant or Jewish with hurt feelings.Either way your response is pathetic.Excalibur posted only that material that is verifiable. To attack the messenger rather than the message is a Jewish debating tactic that fosters anti-Semitic attitudes and growth.Your light has been extinguished.

This smells like a classic zionist false-flag operation, against a sect of Jews who don’t quite conform to zionist protocol. I’d like to know how the three alleged perps were “caught.”

  9. DaveE  July 1, 2012 at 4:29 pm

If that were true you wouldn’t feel so threatened, would you? Why you even bother is beyond me. It’s not like anyone takes you seriously.

I am not a religious expert, I research historical behavour and, until recently Judaism was not a priority. However I did have Jewish friends associated with common efforts on peace work, anti war protest and so on. In the early days of the formation of Israel they complained bitterly of the quasi threatening letters they were receiving constantly to donate to help Jews returning to Israel and the plans for a greater Israel. They did support the refuges they did not support the Israeli effort to push Jews from Russia, Iran and other global areas where they have lived peacefully for centuries. But the Holocaust was a terrible memory and Israel insinuations “don’t call us when they come for you, unless you help now” was a frightening fact. They have for centuries survived by acting together.
That prompted me to look into non Biblical Jewish history. Not much is found. But one question remains, there were 12 tribes, only one is left the Jewish tribe and descendant of Abraham chosen son to keep the Covenant and rule over his brothers etc. Based on this not unusual tribal history of breaking off and fighting for take over of all, one can easily imagine the Hebrew members of the various tribe did not disappear on their own or give up their views of pre-Jewish Hebraic historical views of the will of God and Moses and the others. From a secular view, not unlike present groups of Biblical religions three are many evidence of historical disagreement. Therefore, while the Holocaust has silenced many for self protection
it shouldn’t be surprising as Israel takes on a course that involves a different interpretation of the Holy Scriptures that some infighting will break out. Again looking at it from a secular position , the issue separating them is not small especially if they are all facing the consequences of Zionists views. Perhaps a more positive expression of how the Sacred Place should be named might help, words that do not exclude other sects.
But it is a familiar story ……

    To Excalibur

    Great post

    and to Jason

Give some arguements and not just cynical criticism. On what basis do you judge Excaliburs I.Q.? If you give a considered response then maybe we can judge your I.Q.?

  12. ricohands  July 1, 2012 at 2:17 pm

That would make him a genius in comparison to yours then.

  13. Jason  July 1, 2012 at 2:11 pm

I’m sorry your IQ is lower than than absolute zero.

The entire ‘excuse’ and justification that jews have given for invading and occupying poor Palestine – genocidally murdering it’s inhabitants of all ages – is supposedly based on scripture from their three thousand year old religion. Now it turns out that their ancient scriptures do not even give them ‘permission’ to occupy Palestine at all – not least until their Messianic prophesy is realised.

I do tend to agree with the point of Mr Yirmiyahu Cohen and also that zionists are very dangerous.

They did no favours to the ordinary jews living in Germany before and during the second wold war. The zionist international leader, Chaim Weizmann, actually declared WAR on Germany on behalf of all jews around the world – despite protests from the jews inside Germany – who were obviously then put in great peril by this. The zionists also declared an international jewish boycott designed to destroy Germany’s economy.

This can be verified and was all reported on the front page of the Daily Express newspaper of London, on 24th March 1933 with the headline: ‘Judea declares War on Germany’. This took the Germans by surprise and was long before any reported ill treatment of jews. Hitler was not in overall control at that time and was only one member of the government. When the economic boycott began to take effect the Germans obviously began to see jews as potential enemy agents – just as the Americans did with the Japanese.

A prominent New York zionist attorney of the time, one Samuel Untermyer, was a leading agitator whipping up stories about the Germans that were clearly untrue. He actually described the jewish war against Germany as a ‘Holy War’.

Many suspect that this was done deliberately by the zionists so that innocent jews within Germany and Europe would be ill treated or killed – and hence make the argument for a settlement in Palestine more pressing. It would also open the way to the zionist ‘political correctness’ doctrine matrix – which leaves most white gentiles psychologically neutered and terrified to speak up for common sense or even their own rights – for fear of breaking this jewish contrived code.

Poor Palestine. Having to have all these cultist nutjobs going after their land as some sort of “divine right”.
