SOUTH PASADENA, CA – On March 18th LA County’s High School of the Arts (LACHSA) will be presenting an evening of art and music to benefit New Directions and their programs for homeless veterans.  The talented LACHSA students will be creating and donating paintings, prints and photography pieces for a silent auction. The event will take place at SPACE, 1506 Mission Street in South Pasadena, March 18, from 6 to 9 pm.

New Directions is proud to be recognized by the community, especially the LACHSA students.  “New Directions believes in the arts as a healing tool and is delighted to be connected in this way,” said Toni Reinis, Executive Director of New Directions.  Rachel Arena, a LACHSA student who helped organize the event, understands the impact of their support.  Rachel points out that “eight-thousand US veterans live on the streets of Los Angeles and face a range of issues including homelessness, post-traumatic stress and joblessness.  Women veterans face additional challenges and need housing and support programs of their own.”

Founded in 1992, New Directions, Inc.  is a 501(c) 3 public benefit corporation that provides comprehensive services to hundreds of homeless veterans each year in five transitional housing facilities.  These services include housing, case management, clinical assistance, legal assistance, remedial education, money management, employment assistance and computer training.  Today it is estimated that between 6,000 and 8,000 veterans live on the streets of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) offers a specialized program combining college-preparatory academic instruction and conservatory-style training in the visual and performing arts.  It is recognized as one of the premier public arts high school in the U.S.  Students are accepted in one of four disciplines: visual arts, music, theater and dance.
