5 Ways to Save Money on Computer Repair Bills

Computers have made our lives easier and they have revolutionized our ability to share and distribute information. But there comes a time when the inevitable will happen: your computer crashes. Most of the time, your computer crashes because of a simple mechanical failure and hopefully you have a warranty that covers your computer, so that you don’t have to pay out of pocket.

However, if you don’t have a warranty or if you create the damage yourself, you have to pay an arm and a leg to have your computer fixed. So, it is smart to find some ways to save money and cut costs before the damage actually happens. Here are five ways to save money on computer repair bills.

  1. Purchase a coverage plan. Usually, your computer retailer will offer a special coverage plan that covers your computer in the instance of any damages. These coverage plans usually range in price, but the price is oftentimes contingent on the cost of your computer. The more expensive your computer is, the higher the price for your coverage plan. However, it may be worth it to simply bite the bullet and purchase the plan, because you could be paying much more in the future.
  2. Buy used parts. When it comes down to it, new parts can cost a fortune. Why spend an arm and a leg on parts when you can simply purchase these parts used – either online or at a computer repair shop in your community. You will usually be spending a fraction on used parts versus what you would be spending on the parts new and fresh out of the box. Not only that, but many of these parts have been refurbished, so they are as good as new.
  3. Fix the computer yourself. If you know what a SFP-10G-SR module is and you are familiar with computer engineering, there is a good chance that you could fix your computer yourself. When it comes down to it, a computer repair shop will charge a markup for the cost of parts and they will charge an hourly fee for labor. Who knows how long it will take to fix your computer, so you could be looking at an incredibly expensive bill. If you fix your computer yourself, you won’t have to pay these costs.
  4. Ask a friend or colleague to fix your computer. There is a good chance that you know someone – you know someone that knows someone – who can fix your computer for you. In exchange for your friend’s service, you could take them out to dinner. If you are only tangentially connected to the person, you could give them a tip or ask how much they would charge. Usually, it will be far less than what you would be paying otherwise.

Have your employer’s IT department fix your computer. If the business you work for has a strong and robust IT department, you could simply have them fix it. Technically, the repairs will be on your employer’s dime, but if you need the computer for work, the costs will be justified. Why outsource the job when you can simply have the repairs done in the course of a workday?
