Musée Oceanogaphic de Monaco
After gambling in the Grand Casino in Monaco, it is a good idea to save some money to visit the wonferful Musée Oceanographic de Monaco. Although I visited l aquariums in differentcountries, this one is special for several reasons.
The Oceanographic Institute was founded by Prince Albert 1st in 1906 who built the institute to promote his interest in oceanography to the world. Because of hisfinancial support and dedication of the current prince, the museum is able not only to present the fish but also many activities for adults and children. Prince Albert II of Monaco, the current prince, comes to some openings of exhibitions and continues the work of his great grandfather.
The Oceanographic Institute receives support from the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco and the Home of Oceans in Paris.
The exhibits of the fish are lively and feature explanations in English, French and Italian. There are 6000 specimens and often there are videos and hands on experiences. When I visited the Oceanographic there was an exhibiton about sharks. I was concerned about the caressing pool where I saw children and adults touching baby sharks. There were exhibits where visitors could touch the sharks’ skin and teeth.
The second Wednesday of every month, the Oceanographic Institute has speakers from scientific, industrial and communtiy services about marine biology.
Currently you can adopt a fish , shark or turtle. It s interesting for children to adopt because they can learn about the conditions of the ocean. It is easy because there is a big clear photo of the sea creatue and people can go to website, click on the animals they want to adopt and pay with a credit card. The people will receive a photo with their names written and some free invitations to see their adoptees. All the information is on www.oceano. org.
It is good to plan for at least three hours to see hours to see the ocenographic. There is nice cafeteria on the roof where visitors can enjoy refreshments and see a magnificent view of the Medeterian Ocean. There is also a very interesting gift shop with many souvenirs for everyone at reasonable prices.
This unique Oceanographic Institute highly recommended. It is worthwhile to go to Monaco just to see the museum.
