MARTINEZ ADDRESSES VFW CONVENTION

Orlando, FL- U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today addressed the 109th National Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. in Orlando, FL. The senator discussed the important contributions veterans have made to our nation. In addition, he underscored the need to improve veterans’ access to quality health care.

"No matter the conflict, members of our armed forces answer the call, rise to the challenge, and make tremendous sacrifices on behalf of a grateful nation," Martinez said. "As an immigrant to America, I have been the beneficiary of those who sacrificed so that I might have the opportunity to live in freedom. Having lived in oppression, I can assure you that freedom is a valued gift and I thank you for your service in the cause of freedom."

Senator Martinez also discussed the advancement of constructing a VA Hospital in Orlando.

"Access to quality health care is a right everyone who has worn our nation’s uniform deserves," said Martinez. "I am happy to say that this long overdue dream of so many Central Florida veterans is finally moving forward. We have secured the property; the plans are in the works; and it’s only a matter of time before a new hospital comes online and begins serving area veterans."

Martinez talked about the Wounded Warrior Act that Congress approved last year. The law mandates a comprehensive strategy on the care, management, and transition of severely wounded military personnel to the Department of Veterans Affairs or civilian life. The policy addresses enhancing healthcare, expanding diagnosis and treatment of post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, improving department response to disability, and rehabilitating patient housing.
