People in yellow shirts circled the hospital and dotted the hallways of the Ann Arbor VA center Wednesday to promote physical fitness.
The VA2K Walk and Roll attracted more than 200 participants for the fifth straight year, as blue skies brought hospital employees and veterans together to walk (or roll) the 1.2 mile path around the medical center.
VA2K is a national initiative with more than 170 VA sites around the country participating in the event, which doubles as a fundraiser for homeless veterans.
“Nationwide we’ve raised more than $300,000 since the program started five years ago,” local coordinator Kim Bruzenberg said.
“Here in Ann Arbor, not counting this year’s total, we’ve raised more than $17,000.”
The event lasted from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and hospital employees ere encouraged to take during their lunch breaks.
“The idea is that anyone can get exercise at any time,” said Bruzenberg, a nurse practitioner who manages the health promotion and disease prevention program at the VA.
