Jody Stevens’ specialty is baking vegan, gluten-free and organic cakes. While this career is quite different from her days in the Air Force, Stevens said military training has skills that translate well to business.
“I think that it provided me with the work ethic and integrity to push forward no matter what the situation is,” said Stevens, who served in the Air Force from 1990 to 1994, including a year-and-a-half stint as an air defense controller in Iceland during Operation Desert Storm.
Her business, jodycakes, makes regular cakes, too, but Stevens said her niche is what keeps the business busy. Houston is a melting pot of people with different dietary and lifestyle restrictions.
On Saturday, Stevens and her business will be one of 15 veteran-owned businesses competing in the Entrepreneurs’ Organization-Houston Veterans Business Battle at Rice University. The finalists, hoping to score financing and harvest new connections, will pitch their companies to a panel of investors starting at 9 a.m.
