U.S. Sen. Mark Begich is offering praise and thanks to an Alaska program that provides service dogs to military members wounded while serving their country.
The service dog training program, including the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Richardson, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center, and the Mat-Su Valley Animal Shelter, recently graduated “Wyatt” – a service dog who has been given to an Alaska soldier wounded in Iraq.
“I am pleased to see this great partnership able to award its first dog,” said Sen. Begich. “Many thanks to all those involved especially the State of Alaska and the Department of Corrections. I look forward to seeing many more service dogs go to our brave men and women who need their companionship and assistance.”
Wyatt was recently introduced to Sgt. (Retired U.S. Army) William Ondell. On his second combat tour to Iraq, Sgt. Ondell was injured when a suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device next to Sgt. Ondell’s vehicle. The blast inflicted serious injuries on Sgt. Ondell and resulted in his medical retirement from the service. It also left him with a significant need for daily assistance.
