Desert Storm Veterans Dying at Early Age

This is data from the last week of September as I struggle to get more of the October Desert Storm Veterans Taps data together.  To read obit columns and see the ages of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and their amazing stories and then to collect and publish the Desert Storm Veteran data it is a struggle.  I reflect on how it must have been for the WW II mustard gas victims, the atomic veterans, and the Agent Orange Veterans.

I look at other groups of civilians that were affected in their lives by exposures.  I look at the Camp Lequene cases and the other bases that are known contamination sites.  I look at the ones that work in mining uranium and working in plants that were ignored.  In my nurse’s heart and soul I know change has to happen.  WE can not ignore toxins be it war time, civilian, or caused by vaccines or medicines.  Others profit from these situations leaving so many thousands to suffer.  The election cycle makes me sick to see the amount of money used by corporations and to get their guy in.  The amounts of money coming in from other states makes me sick because

I want  US Representatives and Senators  that speak for the people!  Does the common citizen know what is really happening to these veterans?  The main stream media ignores the story of deaths after a war but celebrate those that die in theater at war.

7 More Desert Storm Veterans have left us in the last week of September 2010. Ages 40, 41,43,46(2),59, 63 . USA(4), USN, and USAF(2). Two also served in Vietnam. WE will remember each of them!

We pray for their survivors. If you knew them you are welcome to remember them in comments.

Hopefully the VA will keep track of their deaths even if they never went to the VA! WE need a death registry to list names, age, unit served in Gulf War, cause of death. To honor them we must all ask whoever our newly elected US Reps and Senators to pass a law that will initiate a Registry for all Desert Storm Veterans who have died since the war with cause of death and age and unit served in theater or nondeployed! Why does it count if you are killed in theater or come home ill from exposures and then die an early death, they need to be counted and our Drs and Researchers need to have access. Our veterans need to know and account for their fellow brothers and sisters that served. So many Gulf War Veterans have said that they can not locate fellow members of their units and feel that they have died! If they were say 19 when they were in theater then they would just now be 39 and those early age group of deaths need to be recognized!

A decorated Veteran, he served his country for twenty-six years, including deployments to Vietnam and Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield, a component of Desert Storm. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1998.

PAULEY Mr. Carl Scott Pauley, age 43, of Summerville, GA, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010 from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mr. Pauley was born February 14, 1967 in South Charleston, West Virginia, the son of Jackie Lee Pauley and Carolyn Lee Miller Duvio. He was a member of the Alpine Community Church. He was an RN in the critical care unit of

North Fulton Hospital. He was the owner of Triangle Gym. Mr. Pauley was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Desert Storm. He was a graduate of Bonnabel High School Class of 1985. He worked as a Critical Care Nurse at Kenner Regional Hospital until Hurricane Katrina.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Denise Pauley; children: Auston, Ashton, Kriston, Carlee and Rylee Pauley; father and stepmother, Jackie Lee and Carol Pauley; mother and step-father, Carolyn and Armand Duvio; grandson, Alexander Pauley; sisters: Dena Nuessly, Johanna Clark, and Maria Dussel; brothers: Randy Pauley, Todd Duvio, Armand Duvio, Jr., and Jody Duvio. Memorial Services will be held at Riverside Church, 9220 Jefferson Hwy., River Ridge, La., on Monday, October 4, 2010. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM. Service will follow.

Charles W. Sabina of Havre deGrace passed away Sept. 10, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was 64. He was born in Rockland, Mass., to the late Joseph J. and Stacia A. (Mileski) Sabina. He was a graduate of Rockland High School in 1964. Mr. Sabina was a retired U.S. Army veteran, having served his country during the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. When he retired from the Army, he worked as civil service for the Aberdeen Proving

Ground. He loved golfing, bowling and the Boston Red Sox and N.E. Patriots. He was the devoted husband of Chong Suk Sabina; loving father of Christine C. Wachter and Edward W. Sabina of Maryland; William, Stacy and James of California; grandfather of Taylor E. Wachter, Chase W. Sabina and Rylyn M. Sabina. He also leaves three sisters, Wanda Salvatore of Norwell, Mass., Jo-Ann Tavares and Barbara Butler of Taunton, Mass.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Joseph J. Sabina Jr.

John Edwin Heise, III (1969-2010)  |

John Edwin Heise, III, Ooltewah, Tennessee, died Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 1 P. M. Friday at Church of the Nativity, Ft. Oglethorpe, GA with Rev. Betty Latham officiating. Visitation will be from 12-1 P. M. Friday at Church of the Nativity.
The remains are to be cremated.
Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He had been a resident of the Chattanooga area for over 10 years and was a member of the Church of the Nativity in Fort Oglethorpe. Mr. Heise was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in the Gulf War.

He was a service technician with ADT and enjoyed billiards, fishing, motorcycling, cowboyaction shootings and spending time with his dogs Heidi and Mara. He was preceded in death by his father, John Edwin Heise Jr.
Survivors are his mother, Mary Heise; sister, Elizabeth (Opie) Reed, Newport, Tenn.; fiancé, Jeannine Segatto; nieces, Jessi and Alicia Reed, Newport, Tenn.; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

JONES, Jarrod A. Spuddy Age 40 of Dayton, Ohio died Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at home from complications of diabetes. A veteran of The United States Army, Desert Storm; Jarrod worked for Ovonics Energy Products, and

Gospel Superfest USA. Jarrod was a proud single dad, sports fanatic and avid volunteer in the greater Dayton area youth soccer and basketball leagues, where he coached his daughter. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Nia A. Jones, who was his joy; her brothers, Wayne and Isaiah; his parents, Nyra (Edgar) Davenport and Frederick (Wanda) Jones.  Beloved grandmother, Virginia Cartwright; siblings, Justin Oliver, Tyrone (Ebony) Davenport, Lateesha, Deja and Jordon Jones. Aunts and uncles, Rosalyn Jones, Gail Peoples, Linda Jones, Bobby (Renita) Cartwright Jr., Richard Jones and Lanell Arrington. Arturo A. Adame

ADAME
Arturo A. Adame of San Antonio passed away on September 29, 2010 at the age of 59. He was born in Kingsville, TX on September 25, 1951 to Amando and Olga Adame. Arturo served in the USAF, National Guard, Army Reserves and worked for the Corpus Christi Army Depot as a civilian aircraft mechanic. He also served in Desert Storm as a civilian worker and was in the Corpus Christi Veterans Band as part of the Color Guard.

Arturo was preceded in death by his father, Amando Adame, his brothers, Amando Adame III and Eddie Adame, and his sister, Liza Ann Adame. Arturo is survived by his loving wife, Andrea G. Adame, his daughters, Liza Ann Adame-Contreras and husband Troy, of San Antonio, Celinda Adame of San Antonio, brothers, Alvaro J. Adame of San Antonio and George Adame (Becky) of Kingsville and a sister, Judy Garza-Gilbert of Kingsville.

Kenneth Charles Ferro, RN, MSN (LTC, USA, Ret)
(January 4, 1947 – September 27, 2010)

(Age 63) Kenneth Charles Ferro passed peacefully away the afternoon of Monday, September 27, 2010. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and uncle, he was born in Granite City, Illinois on January 4, 1947, as the second of four children. A track star at Granite City High School, Ken remained active in the drama department even appearing as “Freddy” in “My Fair Lady,” and worked summers at Granite City Steel.

After graduating high school, he then attended University of Illinois, ultimately receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Communications at Southern Illinois University. In the summer of 1970, Ken was drafted into the United States Army and deployed to Vietnam. Following his tour, he attended Officer Candidate School, eventually returning to Southern Illinois University to complete his Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

During a tour of duty at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, he received his Masters of Science in Nursing. Ken then received post-graduate education at ICNE Spokane. Ken went on to serve tours of duty at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington DC; Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX; Münich, Germany; Ft. Benning, GA in both the hospital and M.A.S.H. unit; Ft. Monmouth, NJ; and finally with the 396th Combat Support Hospital in Spokane, WA. A decorated Veteran, he served his country for twenty-six years, including deployments to Vietnam and Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield, a component of Desert Storm. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1998. Upon retirement Ken continued his nursing career in the Greater Spokane area working at Gentiva Home Care Services, Gonzaga University’s Jesuit House Clinic and finally as a nursing supervisor at the Spokane Veterans Home. His final position with the Veterans Home spoke not only of his dedication to his profession, but of his dedication to his fellow veterans.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 14 years, VictoriaZ. Ferro of Spokane; his daughters Dana Valentino, Toni Ferro, and Elizabeth Lamb-Ferro; sisters Diana Provines, Donna Carli, and Doris Foster; step-mother Margaret Ferro and three grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Peter C. Ferro, and mother, Evelyn J. Ferro.

Services celebrating the life of Kenneth C. Ferro will be held at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St. Spokane, Washington 99208 at 4:00 PM on Friday, October 1, 2010. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Veterans Home Veteran’s Betterment Fund or to St. David’s Fellowship Fund.

Brian Scott Engle Brian Scott Engle, 46, of Anaheim, California and formerly of Waukegan passed away on Monday, September 13, 2010 in Anaheim.

He was born on January 19, 1964 in Waukegan. Brian was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He worked as an Altiris Consultant.

Brian is survived by his wife, Jackie Engle; children, Brandon and Alexandra Engle;mother, Louise Engle; father, Hal Engle; brothers, Curtis (Karen) Engle,Alan (Jocelyn) Engle and Dean Engle, nieces and nephews, Justin, RyanNathan, Kayla and Lana Engle, Ashley Greer. Visitation will be from 5:00to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 1, 2010 at THE MEMORIAL CHAPEL OF WAUKEGAN 1521 Washington St. Waukegan and from 9:00 to 10:00AM on Saturday October 2, 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church 824 N. Lewis Ave in Waukegan. Service will begin at 10:00. Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. on Monday, October 4 2010.
