D-DAY CELEBRATIONS – Visit of the American President Barack Obama – NORMANDY – FRANCE
Saturday 6 June 2009 is D-Day 65, the 65th anniversary of the Normandy landings in World War II, the biggest wartime operation.Join the heroes from 1944 and today are honoured in major commemorative and celebratory events on both sides of the English Channel.
Normandy will welcome its liberators with great pleasure and emotion to mark the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy Campaign . We know that many veterans should be present in Normandy 2009
Special events and celebrations will be held in Normandy, France on 6 June this year to commemorate the date in 1944 when Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
The occasion is celebrated every year but the 2009 commemorations will be particularly special as they will mark the 65th anniversary of D-Day.
American president Barack Obama will be among the people visiting Normandy for the event, along with some 800 British veterans who fought in the war.
The celebrations will include 25 simultaneous firework displays from one end of the landing beaches to the other on 5 June, followed by a glider demonstration and parachute drop in the early hours of 6 June.
Bayeux, the first French city to be liberated by the Allies, will host a World War II vehicle procession on 7 June, while various other events, concerts and entertainment will be arranged at other sites in Normandy.
The Normandy landings were the first stage of Operation Overlord, the invasion of north-west Europe by Allied forces that eventually led to the German retreat from France.
Sixty-five years have passed since D-Day, the momentous military operation that heralded France’s return to freedom and the end of Nazi oppression.
For generations of local people, memories of those Landings and the ensuing 80-day Normandy Campaign remain as vivid as ever, such was the tumult and turmoil, as attested by our many museums, monuments and steles.
That is why we in Normandy remain so determined to remember those young men who selflessly came here to give or risk their lives in order to liberate us. We intend to use the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy Campaign to pay a truly solemn tribute to “our veterans”, many of whom continue to travel here each year
