Albany-NY On the steps of the state Capitol, US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand along with state and local lawmakers are getting the word on a little known – new law, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Program.
For every new veteran a business owner hires they will received a $6 thousand dollar tax credit. It’s all part of stimulus bill.
It’s a tough economy out there… National unemployment numbers are up to 8.5%.
It’s no secret that the job market is slow going.
Now veterans are feeling the pain too; coming home from fighting overseas and having a tough time getting hired.
“When they left the economy was good and then they come back and look at it now… General Motors is almost closed. How many vets lost their jobs there,” asks Army Vet Bill Mahoney of Albany.
Mahoney served in Korea back in the 1970’s. Monday marked his 30th CATscan for traces of Agent Orange in his system. He knows the difficulty of life after fighting overseas.
“They have enough problems dealing with everything else -getting to re-know their families and everyone else. So not having a job would be the worst.”
“We’ve asked them to sacrifice everything, to put their lives on the line for all the freedoms we believe in and the least we could do is to make sure that when they come home that they have an opportunity to continue to provide for their families,” says Gillibrand.
According to Gillibrand 3 out of 4 veterans who recently came home are having trouble finding jobs.
“They are very well disciplined and they are very well trained. I think they make excellent employee and if I had a company I would hire nothing but veterans,” says Mahoney.
The tax break is good until 2010
