by KYW’s Matt Leon  Some local lawmakers announced legislation designed to help increase job opportunities for veterans.New Jersey Congressman John Adler and Bucks County Congressman Patrick Murphy are the driving forces behind the proposed legislation.  Murphy says one bill is the Success after Service Act:

“Which allows veteran-owned businesses to…      “Which allows veteran-owned businesses to obtain contracts and subcontracts within the veteran’s administration.  And the second bill is the Veteran’s Small Business Act, which does the same thing but it applies to all federal agencies. What these bills do will give these folks a leg up in within the contracting provisions and allow them to potentially get some contracts and subcontracts within federal agencies.”

The goal of the legislation is to help combat veteran unemployment — Murphy and Adler say the unemployment rate among young veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 is 50 percent higher than the national average.

The bills are set to soon come up to a vote before the House Veteran’s Affairs Committee.
