HEROES IN PARADISE

Veterans Retreat and Wakatobi Dive Resort announce Heroes in Paradise; "Best VACATION in the World" – a contest to benefit America’s wounded heroes who have fought in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The winner will enjoy a 1-month long respite and dream vacation, inclusive of daily scuba diving and many other recreation, educational, and inspirational activities at one of the worlds most exclusive, all inclusive dive resorts, on the private tropical island of Tolandono, in Indonesia.

We honor these brave men and women through this contest as a way to express our respect, admiration, and gratitude for those who have made the most honorable of sacrifices – that of mind, body and spirit for the benefit of all Americans whose rights and freedoms they fought for.

——————————————————————————–

Who Can Enter: Any veteran of the armed forces who can substantiate an injury while serving in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars.

How to Enter: Contestants will simply tell us their war story. Submissions could include information about who they are, where they are from, branch of service, where they were stationed, what was their occupation in the military, where they fought, how they were injured, how was there recovery, what are they doing now, what do they want to do in the future and why they would like to go to Wakatobi. There is no minimum or maximum length and no formal criteria to include. We will accept entries in either written or video format.

The Prize: The winner will be chosen by the board of directors of Veterans Retreat and Wakatobi Dive Resort and announced on January 1st, 2010. Within 90 days of announcement, the winner will be flown from their hometown, anywhere in the US to Bali, in Indonesia. They will enjoy a night or two in Bali, take a tour of the island and then be taken by private jet to the exclusive Island resort of Wakatobi.

Blog: The winner will post video, image and text based blogs of their daily activities on the HeroesInParadise.com web-site so their adventure can be viewed, via the internet, from anywhere around the world.

Secondary Prize: A secondary prize will be awarded to a random winner that will be drawn from ALL contestants (drawing on January 1, 2010). The winner of the secondary prize will receive an all expenses paid trip to Miami Beach for a week-long stay with their spouse, their child, significant other, or caregiver.

Costs to Winner: There is absolutely no cost to the winner. Veterans Retreat and Wakatobi will pay for and coordinate all travel, lodging, food and activities for the entire time the winner is on "vacation".

Why We Do What We Do: The average stay for a recovering veteran at Walter Reed Medical Center is approximately two years. That is a long time to be bedridden or confined to a hospital facility, especially for athletic, adventurous, and outgoing individuals, such as those who serve in the military. Veterans Retreat strives to get our recovering war heroes active again, in both mind and body, through our recreational, educational, and inspirational courses and activities.

Each contest participant will be rewarded in some way. Everyone who enters the contest will be left with a written journal or digital record of his or her war story. Story telling can be a therapeutic tool used to reduce post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to put into perspective events that have had an impact on someone’s life.

We hope this contest encourages all those who have been wounded in battle, to tell their story so that future generations will not forget the sacrifices they have made on their behalf and so that we never forget the true cost of war.

Help getting the word out: We are asking for help in spreading the word so that every eligible veteran who has served in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars will hear about the Best VACATION in the World contest – and have a chance at winning a dream vacation.

About Veterans Retreat: Veterans Retreat, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, was established to enrich the lives of America’s returning war veterans who suffer from myriad debilitating injuries from the battlefield. Veterans Retreat sponsors introductory flight instruction courses, sailing instruction, deep sea fishing excursions, scuba diving certification, and more. Our eventual Florida Keys retreat facility will provide VR courses and activities for the entire family (and caregiver) so that family healing can take place in a tranquil and tropical atmosphere.
