August 2, 2004

WASHINGTON  The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a grant of more than $6 million to the state of Maine to construct a new residential care facility for veterans at Machias, which will be Maine‘s sixth state veterans home.

“This grant reflects the federal-state partnership that is honoring our commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi.  “This partnership provides a comfortable setting for veterans in a time of great personal need.”

The award of $6.17 million will pay up to 65 percent of the cost to build the 30-bed domiciliary.  The overall cost of the project is nearly $9.5 million.

Maine has five existing veterans’ homes in AugustaBangor, Caribou, Scarborough and South Paris.  They provide rehabilitation and skilled nursing care.
