Stateline Veteran Sues To Get His Job Back After Returning From Iraq

by Bob Ryder

Former Rockton Police Officer Jeremiah Johnson is fighting to get his job back.

He attended a press conference in Chicago at the Thompson Center Wednesday with his family and his attorney.

Johnson claims he was terminated from his job in Rockton 11 days after he informed the department that he was being activated for duty in Iraq.

Johnson says he returned from duty in Iraq with Freeport’s 333rd Military Police Unit after re-injuring his back and getting an Honorable Discharge due to medical conditions.

Despite his injury and the lawsuit, Johnson still hopes to return to police duty and says, “I just love being a police officer…and that’s all I want to do is go back to that.”

Attorneys for the Village of Rockton say they haven’t received papers for the lawsuit yet.

Village President Dale Adams says Johnson was still on probation at the time of his firing and that he didn’t meet the police department’s standards. He adds another officer from Johnson’s unit is still on active duty and the police department is saving his job for him.
