BAGHDAD — U.S. troops Wednesday rescued a U.S. citizen, Roy Hallums, held hostage in Iraq since November and also freed an Iraqi prisoner.
Al Jazeera, the Arab television news agency, said the contractor was in good condition after he was rescued from a farmhouse 15 miles south of Baghdad. The U.S. military said it received a tip on Hallums’ whereabouts from an Iraqi detainee.
The 57-year-old Hallums had been kidnapped at gunpoint from his office in Baghdad’s Mansour district more than 10 months ago. He was working for the Saudi Arabian Trading and Construction Co. supplying food to the Iraqi army.
Hallums’ ex-wife, who divorced after 30 years, said she talked to Hallums by telephone early Wednesday and that he had received medical attention.
More than 20,000 foreign civilians are in Iraq and more than 200 have been kidnapped since March 2003.
A roadside bomb killed at least 16 people, including four U.S. security contractors, and wounded 21 others in southern Iraq.
