Startling discovery in remote Sierra Nevada glacier is being unearthed today

Climbers in the Sierra Nevada made a startling discovery in Kings Canyon National Park when they came across the body of an airman believed to have died in 1942.

Park rangers and military officials are trying to excavate the body. Officials believe the serviceman, who is wearing a U.S. Army Corps parachute, may be part of the crew of a navigational training plane that crashed on November 18, 1942. It’s believed most of the plane is preserved above the spot where the airman was found.

The body is 80 percent encased in ice on 13,710-foot Mount Mendel. When it has been recovered, identified and confirmed to be that of a U.S. military serviceman, it would be flown to the family. They would have the option of burying airman with full military honors at the government’s expense.
