Military Sex Wars
By Cliff Albert

No one apparently wants to talk about itbut a recent story in the Salt Lake Tribune suggests that despite restrictions from the Pentagon, sex is rampant among the men and women in uniform serving in Iraq.

The story says that with this war being the first one in which so many men and women are serving together in combat related units, experts say it’s not surprising and it’s not good.

Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness for one says it’s the price we pay for gender-integrated military.

And despite the fact she’s a womanshe is not for itcalling it a national security issue.

The Salt Lake Tribune talked to male and female soldiers in Iraq, who said that for those in their late teens and early 20’s in the military, sex is just something they do and no one should be surprised about it.

I’m not so sure everybody’s doing itbut few of us will probably argue that when you put a bunch of 18, 19 and 20 year olds together, temptations are a lot harder to resist…

The report says that while the military has rules against guy soldiers being in the same room behind closed doors with a gal soldier, they admit sex happens. And that’s why medics hand out condoms and pregnancy kits.

Moral questions asidethe big question is what impact all of this has on the safety and effectiveness of some combat units.

Elaine Donnelly puts it this way, “The problemis that those involved in sexual relationships will trust one another to the exclusion of everyone else.”

And she adds “when trust among troops is compromised, lives will be lost.”
