PRESIDENT BUSH ADMITS TO A FEDERAL CRIME
U.S.A. – Monarchy or Democracy?
by John P. Allen
Well folks, we can spin, look the other way, pretend, close your eyes, and even stick our collective heads into the ground, but no matter how we slice it, President Bush admitted to committing a federal crime this week.
The administration’s four-year-old program to spy without warrants on international calls and e-mails of Americans and others inside the United States with suspected ties to al-Qaida has been exposed.
George W. Bush had 2 ways to legally order wire taps and neither was followed.
He could have obtained a normal warrant or obtained a warrant 72 hours after he authorized the spying on a specific American from the secret court. He could have done the latter in emergency. He just decided to do it on his own without court approval and that is against the law.
Under the U.S. system of law, the President of the United States is not a King and cannot make up his own laws to suit his needs. So why not order the spying and get the warrant afterwards as the law allows? Why dismiss the law? What? ……..
It is my understanding that the reason we have checks and balances in our system of government is precisely because we don’t want a King to rule the country. That absolute power of the President is not allowed. In fact, we fought against such absolute power to make our country into the model of freedom and liberty for which we stand. It is that simple.
So today, we have a tough choice.
- Do we follow the law, indict our president, and affirm our democracy?
- Or do we look the other way and accept a King as ruler of the land?
Look, it pains me at the highest level to call it like it is. I mean nobody wants the President of the U.S. to be charged with a crime. This is extremely serious for all of us. But who are we to call for democracy in the Middle East if we the people of the U.S. anoint a King in our own country?
To me, the Presidency of the US must be bigger than just a man. The office must stand a beacon for freedom, the rule of law, and democracy. It must be protected at all costs for all of us. We all need to honor the office including George W. Bush.
But then again, if we do not charge Bush with the crime, we’ve lost our democracy and anointed a King. To me, it really is that simple.
In fact, why have a Court or a Congress? We can just have a King who makes up the law as he goes and interprets the laws himself. Because, that’s exactly what George W. Bush has done and he said so on camera.
As it stands, spying on Americans without warrant is clearly AGAINST THE LAW without question and he admitted it on camera. Now what?
No Spin Folks! This is a watershed moment..and the world is watching. Is the U.S.A. by action a monarchy or democracy? Our actions will now speak so loud that no one will hear what we’re saying! Yes, today is a sad day for all us. However, it may also be a great day for freedom, liberty, and democracy.
