VA Home Loans: What is an “entitlement”?

Many veterans have used their entitlement or are currently using their entitlement in the VA Home Loan Guarantee Program.

This valuable benefits program allows veterans to purchase a home with no down payment and no closing costs because part of the loan is guaranteed from default by the VA.  This means that veterans will have a much easier time purchasing a home without having to wait to save money for all of the costs normally associated with buying a home.

In order to use entitlement in the VA Home Loan Guarantee Program the first step a veteran must take is to prove their eligibility.  To take part in the Home Loan Program a veteran must turn in a Certificate of Eligibility and in order to get a Certificate of Eligibility the veteran must first request their military service records.  Standard Form 180, or SF-180, is the military records request form.  You must have proof of your military service in order to take part in any benefits, services, or programs offered by the VA.

There are many ways to get a SF-180 and get the copy of your military records that you will need to use your VA benefits.  Some of these ways include:

  • You can download and print a copy of the SF-180 on the internet.
  • You can order the SF-180.  If you call the fax on demand system at 301-837-0990 from a fax machine you can follow the instructions and request document number 2255 and the SF-180 will be faxed directly to you.
  • You can write to The National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri, 63132, and request the SF-180.
  • You can call 1-866-272-6272 and request the SF-180.
  • You can also contact them through email to get a SF-180
  • You can also obtain a SF-180 by contacting your local VA office and requesting one.

Once you have obtained SF-180 you need to submit this request for your military records and wait.  Once you receive your record of military service you can continue onto the next step of applying for a Certificate of Eligibility and accessing your VA benefits.
