Vietnam Veterans Wanted To Fill Railroad positions
by Sharon Letts
How would you like to make $40,000 to 60,000 a year to start, room and board, while being trained and a chance see the country while riding on a locomotive?
Sound too good to be true? The Vietnam Veterans of California Inc. have funding to train and place Northern California Vietnam vets to be railroad engineers and conductors.
The North Coast Veterans Resource Center’s employment training specialist, Neala Cantleberry, is excited to be able to offer this kind of training to Vietnam Veterans.
Our funding comes from the Vietnam Employment Assistance Program, which draws from the Governor’s Discretion Fund from the state. We have until June 30th of this year to use the remaining funds for this particular program….
The program consists of a one-time orientation held each Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at 2107 3rd St. (through the 24th of June), and a two-month training program.
Participants will train at the Modoc Railroad Academy in Sacramento, said Cantleberry.
A small studio apartment near the facility will be provided.
Jim Kirby, a past grad of the program is now working full time in Florida and has just been promoted from engineer to conductor. It’s a good program. I’d recommend it to anyone, he said.
The center has been successful in training 80 vets in the past 18 months. For more information, contact the center at (707) 442-4322, or stop by the orientation this Saturday morning.
