In wartime, veterans deserve particular gratitude, and disabled vets need the best care nation can give

Veterans Day is observed on the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. This Nov. 11, there is no end to hostilities in sight.

As the war in Iraq drags on, the number of veterans increases, as does the number of casualties. Returning home, these brave men and women deserve more than bumper stickers urging support for the troops.

Advanced armor and medicine has kept alive many wounded soldiers who would have died in earlier conflicts. Many of the wounded are grievously so and require prolonged, sometimes lifelong treatment and rehabilitation.

The Democrats who have won control of Congress pledge to adopt a pay-as-you-go fiscal policy. To make good on their promise, they will have to budget in coming years hundreds of billions of dollars for veterans’ care and benefits, even if it means doing away with pork spending and asking Americans to sacrifice a few dollars each on veterans’ behalf.

Although control of Congress has changed hands and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has resigned, prospects for a swift end to U.S. military intervention in Iraq are next to nil. The same applies to Afghanistan, where failure to fully secure and redevelop the country has left it vulnerable to a Taliban resurgence…

Al-Qaida’s lead terrorists, apparently able to live, recruit and train with impunity in Pakistan’s lawless tribal areas, pledge continued attacks on U.S. targets. Recent news includes reports that Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, is tracking 30 or more homegrown terrorist plots. Speakers at last week’s annual luncheon of the Holocaust Museum Houston noted that an entire culture was raising its children to become suicide bombers.

Throughout its history, the United States has had to rely on the sense of duty and sacrifice of its armed forces. On this wartime Veterans Day with much danger ahead, Americans should need little urging to be acutely grateful and aware.
