Attn.: VT,
As you are aware, I’ve been trying to get an apology from Japan for its atrocities during World War II. None of my correspondence to the White House, Congress and The VFW has been answered since I started the project 6 months or so and follow-up mail was also ignored. This blocked my program completely so I’ve taken the only choice left, i.e. to call a halt pending some spectacular action. I can’t see any on the horizon since my experience is that the mail over the 6-month period probably hasn’t even been read by the White House and mail to secretaries has been ignored by instruction. I informed both the President and Vice President of my decision and the reasons for it.
I regret this action was necessary because an apology (or equivalent) is needed for closure, honoring veterans and to preserve our heritage for younger generations. I leave the matter of the 60 years which have elapsed since the war, for others to attempt to explain. I can’t imagine veterans allowing a program to get an apology from Japan to wither; there’s nothing wrong in saying: We won the war that was thrust upon us and an apology is deserved.
Morgan, it’s been a real pleasure working with VT and reading opinions of other veterans.
Sincerely,
Bob Schneider
