Government Experiments: A Betrayal of Our Veterans
by John Waltz, Special Assignment Writer for The Firebase Network

Throughout the history of warfare chemical and biological toxins have been used. As the years passed the more advanced and deadlier the weapons became. In America the testing of new weapons has subjected service members to being exposed to hazardous and lethal toxins.

Atomic Veterans

During World War 2 in what is now called the Atomic Veterans, servicemen were exposed to ionizing radiation from atomic and nuclear weapons testing. It all began with the Trinity Blast on July 16, 1945. The Atomic Energy Commission in conjunction with the Department of Defense (DoD) had troops witness the detonation of blasts up close. Many of these blasts were much larger than either of the Atomic blasts in Japan.

The Atomic Veterans were also responsible for the cleanup of both Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The total amount of nuclear atmospheric testing that our military was involved in is estimated at 235 tests.

The National Association of Atomic Veterans says that an estimated 382,000 troops and civilians took part in testing during the Cold War period. Most of the Atomic Veterans have since died due to nuclear related illnesses such as cancer. The testing all stopped in 1963 with the passing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. http://www.naav.com/index.htm …

MK Ultra

MK Ultra was an experiment conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that lasted from the 1950’s to the 1970’s. It involved mind control research and was ordered by the then CIA director Allen Dulles in response to Chinese, Russian and Korean mind control techniques used on American Prisoners of War.

The overall scope of the project is unknown because most of the records were destroyed in 1972 by the then CIA director Richard Helms. From what is known the experiments included radiation and LSD. The experiments also subjected CIA employees, military troops, other government agent and people in the general population.

In the summer of 1975 Congressional hearings were held and along with the Rockefeller Commission report revealed to the public for the first time that the CIA and DoD performed testing with and without test subject’s knowledge.

Project Whitecoat

In an effort to conduct germ warfare testing an experiment referred to as Project Whitecoat was created. The testing took place from 1954 to 1973 and included 2300 servicemen.

The DoD established Camp Dietrick during World War 2 which was located in Maryland for the sole purpose of this experiment. This study included the effects of both offensive and defensive aspects of biological warfare. Once again our military members were unaware of the hazards.

Agent Orange

During the Vietnam War a dioxin that was called Agent Orange (AO) was used as a defoliant. This was in attempt to deny enemy cover and concealment in dense terrain.

It was comprised of a 50/50 mixture of 2, 4-F and 2, 4, 5-T with Kerosene or Diesel added in to aid distribution. It was deployed by air vehicle and also by hand. It is estimated that 19 million gallons were used and at least 2.5 million veterans were affected.

Little to no studies was done prior to the usage of AO and the truth did not start coming out until 1990. On May 5, 1990 Admiral Zumwalt Jr. gave a report to the Department of Defense on the adverse health effects and exposures to AO. Admiral Zumwalt made this statement about AO, It is at least as likely as not that the exposure to Agent Orange is known to cause numerous life threatening, debilitating and deforming diseases. His son Elmo Zumwalt III was also in the Navy during the Vietnam War and died from AO related cancer.

BZ (Quinuclidinyl Benzilate)

Quinuclidinyl Benzilate was a psychedelic agent known as Buzz. It was used between the years 1953 to 1964 and was deployed by spraying it from aircraft and utilized in conventional bombs. BZ is a psychotropic chemical which acts primarily in the nervous systems which skews brain function. This will cause alterations in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior. 362 servicemen were tested in Utah in 1964 under a project code named Dork. Records are classified and unavailable even using the Freedom of Information Act.

This is just a few examples of the harmful experiments and hazardous chemicals that our veterans have been exposed to. There is no way for a veteran to hold the government liable because of the Feres Doctrine. The Feres Doctrine protects the government from being held responsible for anything that happens to our service members during their military enlistment.

If there is going to be any change for the treatment of our veterans the outdated Feres Doctrine needs to be reversed. This will finally force the government to provide compensation, properly treat our veterans and provide for the veteran’s families.

American citizens deserve to be completely aware of the harmful experiments that take place in our military. With the truths revealed Americans would demand justice for our veterans. http://www.answers.com/topic/feres-doctrine
