Part 2: History Refresher: Iraq War Goes Back 50 Years

The war going on in Iraq now has a direct connection to events that occurred 50 years ago. In 1953 the Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Moseddeq was irritated that the British were ripping off his countries natural resources. ( Reference ) The British turned to the U.S. for help and Dwight D. Eisenhower declared that Moseddeq was a communist and needed to be removed from power. Eisenhower ordered the CIA to overthrow the Iranian government.

This brought the Shah back into power which was an extremely oppressive regime. It only lasted 20 years when a revolution occurred in Iran which brought Ayatollah Khomeini into power. The Ayatollah was violently anti-American and created a formidable foe for the U.S. ( Reference )

In turn the U.S. government made a puppet out of Saddam Hussein because he was anti-Iranian. When Saddam started losing the war with Iran the American Government intervened by giving Iraq $5 billion in loans and $4 billion in military equipment and also chemical/biological weapons. This is now known as Iraqgate …

Saddam turned on America and showed his true colors by invading Kuwait in the summer of 1990. In response America sent troops to Saudia Arabia to protect them. The protection we provided Saudia Arabia created another powerful enemy named Osama Bin Laden because he was irritated at the fact America was defending Saudia Arabia.

The American government hand fed Saddam everything he needed to create an army with the capabilities to use chemical and biological warfare. Once he got out of control the U.S. government needed to put him at bay without drawing too much attention to Iraqgate. Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait set the stage to demonize Saddam and the urge to take him out.
