Baltimore County, Maryland is located amid the Baltimore-Washington market, surrounding the independent city of Baltimore. Over the past few decades, the basic demography of the County has changed from predominately rural to an urban and rural mix. With 598 square miles of land, Baltimore County has the third largest land area, the third largest population (804,600, County's July 2006 estimate), and the second highest number of jobs (482,719, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis 2004) in Maryland. The County is the largest jurisdiction in the Baltimore metropolitan area with a population in excess of 2.65 million. The city of Baltimore and Baltimore County are entirely separate political units.
