Soldiers’ Angels Announces Holiday Blanket Drive

Non-profit Soldiers’ Angels announces the Blankets of Belief project, designed to tell each American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman deployed around the world during the 2008-2009 Holiday Season, “We Believe in You!”

This winter, an estimated 180,000 U.S. military personnel will be serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and other locations around the world in combat environments or in support of combat operations.  Some will be on their 3rd or 4th deployments–spending yet another holiday away from the loving arms of family and friends.

Since most Americans can’t show their depth of appreciation to these deployed troops by wrapping their arms around them in person, Blankets of Belief’s goal is to wrap all 180,000 deployed service members in homemade blankets representative of America’s support and faith in them.  When these service members receive a Blanket of Belief, they will know that somebody back home remembered them, that somebody labored over a handmade blanket with love and belief in them.

Paired with a collection of snacks, hot chocolate, and a mug, Blankets of Belief will form the heart of the Soldiers’ Angels Wrapped in Holiday Spirit care packages for the 2008-2009 Holiday Season.

Volunteers do not need to know how to sew in order to create a blanket, so men, women, and children of all ages and skill levels can participate in creating a Blanket of Belief for a deployed service member. Guidelines include directions for no-sew fleece blankets, as well as info about quilted or sewn ones (knitted and crocheted blankets will be welcome for the VA facilities).  Additionally, donations are needed to cover the cost of shipping and supplies for 180,000 blankets.  See www.SoldiersAngels.org for all the details!
