As we celebrated our Independence . . .
. . and salute the brave men and women who are fighting to protect our rights and freedoms overseas, I am proud that the 21st Century GI Bill, which I cosponsored in the Senate, was recently signed into law. Today’s new veterans deserve the same opportunities and gratitude that have been given to veterans of earlier generations.
The 21st Century GI Bill allows eligible active duty, Guard, and Reserve veterans to attend any public university in the nation without charge. If an individual decides to attend a private institution, they can receive tuition benefits equivalent to the most expensive public school in the state. The Federal government will also match private contributions, and will provide sufficient funding for books and living expenses. Some unused benefits may also be transferred to a veteran’s spouse and children.
Our new veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be able to use these benefits to transition back to civilian life, just as veterans of past wars were able to do. Providing veterans with higher education and better prospects for employment can only strengthen our communities. These veterans answered their nation’s call and we have a responsibility to support them after they have completed their military service. Sincerely,
Debbie Stabenow
United States Senator
