Years of "Business/Conservative Friendly Government Has Made Us Into a "Banana Republic"

by Gordon Duff

Please, take a moment and examine things we know.  After 7 years of "Patriotic Leadership" we have very little left to be patriotic about.  We live in a country that openly tortures prisoners then uses the information to give them "fair trials".  We are attacked, respond by attacking the wrong country just to steal their oil and fatten up huge corporations with "no bid" contracts and massive fraud.  The "criminals" are caught but nothing is done and they stay in power with new crimes every day.

Years after invading the wrong country, the enemy that attacked us is stronger than ever and we now have to start all over.  Who is going to answer for this?  Who is going to pay?  Who is going to prison?

We are in an economic collapse caused by years of massive corruption "drunken spending" and are trying to BORROW OUR WAY OUT OF DEBT.  Has anyone considered that many of our leaders are simply insane?  Everyone else in the world knows it.  Since the Reagan disaster, despite the brief Clinton "miracle" most Americans now yearn for but few understand, we have been lulled into a stupor, willing to believe any lie, follow any fool and live like broken puppets…

Many Americans still think we have the legal option to stay in Iraq 100 years.  Iraq has an elected government.  That government has asked us to leave.  We, with 150,000 heavily armed troops are "negotiating".  What would you think of an armed thug sitting in your living room holding a gun at your head and "negotiating" to become part of your family?  Have we lost our freaking minds here?

I, myself, blame the liberals and the "liberal press" for all of it.  I am told, almost hourly, that several Hollywood ‘celebs’, some "tree huggers" and the lawyer’s union (Trial Lawyers Association) have been trying to turn the country over to either communists, terrorists, "evil Negros", illegal aliens (allowed into the US in droves by Republicans trying to break unions and keep wages down), "feminazis" (many of whom are carrying guns and defending our country today) and the "anti-gun lobby".

We hear of the liberal press thru the press.  "Commentators" on nearly ever major network do little but warn us of that other "liberal press" with the bias.  I still can’t find them.  Maybe I get the wrong cable channels.  How these "lefties" got control of the Republican supporting corporations that own 90% of the media in the US amazes me.  Sean Penn must be channeling George Patton in stealth mode.

Probably the worst mental "uncertainty" of the several that come to mind, that I suffer from along with many other Americans is patriotism.  I actually love this country and have even fought to defend it, albeit in Vietnam.  Vietnam and Iraq play so well together.  North Vietnam was communist and communism was trying to take over the world.  Russia was a hellhole of prison camps and suffering.  We were the "good guys".  In both wars, we will leave and "the enemy" will take over.  Then we will find we always like "the enemy" anyway, as long as they take bribes the same way "our friends" did and make our tennis shoes and cheap electronics for sweatshop wages.  "Bidness is bidness".  However, after years of torturing prisoners and running our own concentration camps, few in the world see us as "good guys" anymore.

3 times in recent history, American governments have "gone totally nuts" with a massive meltdown.  The first was Nixon, who used the federal government as his personal "revenge squad".  The result was jail for most of his followers, the Vice President, cabinets and campaign staff.  Nixon tried to overthrow our government, got caught and we too quickly forgot the lesson.  Little did we know that history would make us miss Nixon much the way someone would miss the kind attention of the bully that stole their lunch money on the way to kindergarten.  People are odd.

A few years later, a paid actor, pretending to be president, with quips, professional writers and George Herbert Walker Bush’s pulling the strings mesmerized many into believing white was black or that ketchup was a food group.  Maybe this was when we, as a people, decided that a puppet was all we needed and that sticking our collective heads in the sand really didn’t leave our tails in the air as an "easy target".  As it turned out, easy targets we were and 8 years of "Reaganomics" collapsed into massive debt, the looting of our savings and loans, much by Washington insiders (mostly Republicans, several Bush family members) and the unpleasant realization that our government had secretly been sending weapons to our enemies in a convoluted deal that flooded our streets with drugs. (check out www.copvcia.com a sight by former LA cop Mike Ruppert, victim of a series of government attacks and a "mysterious" poisoning incident)

This last fiasco, first "empty suit" Reagan and now Bonzo the Chimp himself, has come as close to sinking America as the Axis powers during World War 2.  While our kids are dying in the middle east, chasing ghosts, the American legal system, economy and character itself have succumbed to an assault that is comparable to occupation by an unfriendly foreign power.

Not only has this "foreign power" taken away our constitutional rights, but they have looted our treasury, left us powerless to defend ourselves, created a huge secret police organization which can now freely spy on any American in ways we never imagined but they have done so with the full cooperation of millions of Americans who call it "patriotism".

As Lincoln had warned long ago, the only foreign power that could destroy America is America.  One thing living in America has taught me is that any time someone tells me they are either a patriot or Christian, I keep my back to the wall, my powder dry and my wallet in a front pocket.  Where is the America that cheated the Indians out of Manhattan and could spot a lame horse a mile away?  Are we such rubes that we have let a pack of flag waving, bible thumping con men steal the family farm?

Our own country has been destroyed, stolen away in the night, not by terrorists or armies but by public relations agencies, crooked politicians, oil and defense company hacks helped along by the frightned, the cowardly and foolish who know nothing about what America means to those who love freedom and are ready to pay the real price, not let "big guvmint" take care of them.

Anyone who finds Bush America, led by the most hated government in our history, a decent place to raise children, and live with pride and decency, would have been happy living under Stalin or Hitler.  Participation in this farcical distortion of what our founding fathers hoped for without standing up and speaking out is unforgiveable.  It took over 200 years to build America, each year watching it grow, become more mature, wise, caring and powerful and in 7 years, 7 short years, a generation, perhaps a generation that may become infamous for all time, allowed America to die.

For 7 years I have heard little from some but how much money they were making while others suffered, some fought and died and our freedoms disappeared.  Now, even some of those, the greedy, the fearful, the "takers" are having to pay.  Half of America lives 2 paychecks from homelessness.  That number goes up ever day.  Pick up a newspaper, watch your TV, believe what you are told.  Hope the wolf misses your door.

Americans are a funny crew.  We forget so easily why we are free and who fought for those freedoms.  In a country with no jobs, no money and no prospects we have erased and falsified so much of our own history that we have no lessons to look back to.  Much of what makes what is left of "almost post-Bush America" viable exists only because people stood up against the powers that have now taken total control of America.

Labor unions, like the UAW or the AFL-CIO and their "Progressive Era" precursors built America as we know it.  Public education, clean food and water, decent working conditions, safe neighborhoods, just laws, all only came about because workers stood against the rich and powerful who wanted America as a dictatorship.

This is the real history of the last 150 years, not what we show on TV and teach our kids.  Forgetting the work, the suffering and sacrifice of Americans who dissented, who fought, who forced change, be it John L. Lewis, Walter Reuther or Martin Luther King, forgetting that the real America and what makes us proud, came more from them and those like them than any other group has put us where we are today, drowning.

gduffAfter 7 years, you can now protest.  Simply find a "free speech zone", walk thru the cordon of "cops", hoping your head isn’t bashed in, and quietly protest all you like.  "Business" will find you candidates to vote for.  The "bosses" will send your kids to war.  They will continue to fatten their friends while you pick up the check.  We now are spending endless billions bailing out the rich because they risk losing money because of bad investments.  They robbed America blind for 7 years and wonder why nothing is left?
