Congressman Phil Hare says 30,000 troops are being improperly diagnosed

Congressman Phil Hare is helping a Chillicothe man get his money back from the United States Army. Hare was in Chillicothe Monday in support of Donald Louis Schmidt. Schmidt was discharged for having a pre-existing personality disorder in 2006 and when he was let go, the U.S. Army took some of Schmidt’s re-enlistment bonus.

But Hare says Schmidt actually had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and he says the army didn’t diagnose it because they didn’t want to pay benefits.

Hare believes a similar thing happened to 30,000 other veterans who should have been diagnosed with P.T.S.D. or traumatic brain injuries, but were instead diagnosed with personality disorders.  Hare says the alleged mis-diagnosis’ saved the government $12.5 billion.

The problem is it isn’t just the money. If they have post traumatic stress disorder, and or a traumatic brain injury they are out there, they are not getting the medical help and they are supposed to get. It’s there’s, said Congressman Phil Hare (D) Dist. 17.

Hare is sponsoring a bill that would put a stop to the alleged misdiagnosing.
