REVIEW:  For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots

3 out of 4 Stars

By Jannette Angelle

American History buffs rejoice! A new documentary is hitting your television screens to bring forth stories of valor and sacrifice once more. If you’re the kind of person who loves the dark sides to American history, you’ll dig For Love of Liberty. However, if you’re not a history enthusiast or a student of African American studies the documentary will prove dull and you’re better off watching Mythbusters on Discovery channel or the news.

For Love of Liberty starts as a warm narrative of a history not well known to the American public. It is a story of witness; of the struggles and sacrifices of the men and women throughout our nation’s history. It’s touching narratives and harrowing testimonials create a sympathy that lingers after its finale.

Introduced by Halle Berry and told through the voices of a variety of actors, the story flows chronologically from the American Revolution to the present conflict in Iraq. This is probably the only problem For Love of Liberty faces. The viewer is distracted by the many famous voices that the story of struggling patriots is lost to a search for whose voice came by at what time. I found myself wondering if that was Morgan Freeman I just heard, or John Goodman, or Mel Gibson. Its wonderful that they all wanted to contribute but the documentary begins to feel oversaturated by their voice-overs and narratives. It’s a little annoying after the second hour to be honest.

Throughout its run, For Love of Liberty tells the story of the black patriots who fought for freedom and country no matter what the cost. The stories are filled with sacrifice and redemption that often times gave no reward after their service. Definitely a film that must be watched in parts, it runs a total of four hours but very rarely proves itself slight. The films stunning visuals, meaning the artwork and reenactments tell a wonderfully unique American story. For those of you who love to reminisce in the stories of the fallen and celebrated will enjoy the stories, especially within the first hour of the American Revolution.

The sacrifices of those patriots in times where they fought for a liberty they did not possess was astonishing. The documentary stands as a witness of the injustices that black patriots went through to serve their country. It showcases the valor and determination held by loyal African American men and women throughout our nation’s history. For Love of Liberty is an essential and riveting documentary that I’m sure history fans will enjoy the whole way through.

For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Black Patriots will air nation-wide on PBS in 2009.
