I have been a fan of musician/actor Rick Springfield for many years. This admiration goes way back to my Saturday morning cartoon days when I first listened to my then favorite Springfield album, "Comic Book Heroes."

Springfield, a native Australian, had a cartoon called "Mission Magic" that appeared on American television in the early 1970s. Soon after, he became a teen idol and through the years has appeared on shows such as "Battlestar Galactica."

He is well-known for his role on the soap opera "General Hospital," playing Dr. Noah Drake, a role he continues today.  During the early 1980s, his career skyrocketed when he simultaneously pursued his music career and had a huge hit with his multi-platinum album "Working Class Dog," which contained the hit "Jessie’s Girl." The song earned Springfield his first Grammy.

He has since had numerous hit records and shows no signs of stopping. I have enjoyed watching Springfield in concert many times and he is a terrific entertainer who just seems to get better as the years go on.

I discovered something special on Springfield’s Web site, rickspringfield.com. There is a section devoted to supporting the troops. Springfield and his Web crew have graciously adopted a Army National Guard unit based in Virginia that is serving in the Middle East.

The group has been the recipient of many care packages assembled by Springfield’s Web site merchandise personnel with the

encouragement and support of Springfield. In addition, Springfield has a Christmas CD, "Christmas with You," that is dedicated to our troops who were killed in Iraq.

The video of the title song is filled with photos of fallen soldiers supplied by their families, Gold Star Mothers, and Cherished Lives.com. Proceeds of the recording have been donated to U.S. military veteran organizations and to the Gold Star Mothers, Inc.

The video is beautifully done and, yes, the song will touch your heart tremendously. If you are looking for the perfect Christmas CD, you’ll want to add this one to your collection. It’s fantastic.

Early in Springfield’s career, he traveled with his band to entertain troops in Vietnam. Springfield is a private man, and has never sought the attention that just seems to follow him because he is so loved by has loyal fans.

Springfield’s father was a member of the Australian Armed Forces and would be so proud of his son and his tireless support of the troops. Being the son of a military man, no doubt, inspired Springfield to remember those who have done such much for the freedoms we all enjoy.

Borrowing the lyrics from one of my favorite songs, "Mission Magic":

Do you believe, you believe in magic, ’cause I believe, I believe that I do

Yes, I can see, I believe that it’s magic

If your mission is magic, your love will shine through

I’ve been a fan of Springfield’s for many years. I think people should know about the wonderful things Springfield and his staff do.

Thank you Rick, for sending your love and magical music to our troops and their families.
