How Can a U.S. Soldier Justify Getting His Leg Blown Off Mr. McCain?

by C. J. Tawil

Have you seen the Dear Mr. Obama Video with the U.S. Soldier who lost his leg in the war making the case that it was NOT a mistake to go to war.  Over 8,000,000 people have watched it. And so yeah, Yeah, I watched that video too.  For me, it is heartbreaking to see a young man get hurt like that. There are no words to describe the level of my empathy.

Back in 1991, I had a conversation with an employee who was been sent to, as he put it “Defend Kuwait’s Freedom”. When I sat with him  and explained that my mother and many family members worked in Kuwait along with many of my cousins being born there and that I could speak a little bit on Kuwait’s freedom, he politely and respectfully listened.

I explained that Kuwait was a KINGDOM, not a democracy and that it was run by one guy. My cousins who were born there DID NOT have citizenship.  They were given Lebanese passports upon their birth, even if they have never been there, because they did NOT have royal blood. My uncle who worked and lived there running a succesful shipping business was thrown out by the King for no reason and without due process.

So what freedom was this soldier back from 1991 defending?  Who’s freedom?  The old rich Emir guy?

In 1991, George H. Bush sold it as “defend their freedom”. But, in the end, we knew it was to defend the control of Oil which by extension can be argued that it defended our freedom. But could we have done it a better way?

To this writer, "Defending Freedom" was just the sales pitch and this young 22 year old from Kansas bought it hook, line, and sinker.  They had to sell it this way. Who would go fight just for Oil is some foreign desert land?  That would not sell in America.  We needed a better angle to make the sale and get the job done.

So I with great respect and reverance for this young solider in the video maybe propse that we ask "Are U.S. Soldiers being sold the same bill of goods?" or are we really out there to defend the Iraqi’s freedom?   Watch the Video!

VIDEO:  Dear Mr. Obama

Now with this protracted IRAQ WAR, are our U.S. Soldiers in Iraq to;

1. Defend our freedom?
2. Defend against 911 attackers?
3. Protect the worlds from WMDs?
4. Install Democracy?
5. Stop Islamic Extremism?
6. Defend the world from a Dictator and give Iraqi’s their freedom?

What? Which one?  All of them?  None of them?

Maybe the big questions should be;

  1. Is Going to War for Oil in the Best Interest of the USA worth the price?   and
  2. Why are we so addicated to this Oil stuff that we would go to war over it?

To this writer, thousands of U.S. Soldiers have died and tens of thousands have been maimed along with the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi’s who have lost their lives and way of life and we have to find answers as to why.   We need to do that to justify our existence, morals, values, and to define what we believe in for the future.  Who are we?

For this soldier, it looks like he has already found his answer.  He says it was NOT a mistake.  But was it?  Now what?
