Vets4McCain:  An Open Letter to Veterans

Dear Veterans, Honorary Veterans, Family & Friends,

The countdown to election days is at five weeks and a few days.  As this is being written the future of our economy is in serious doubt.  Well intentioned parties on both sides of the aisle can’t seem to agree on a plan to right the ship and stabilize the markets.  Dire predictions are rolling off the tongues of politicians and pundits alike.

Whether the first debate will happen is in doubt.  This fiscal crisis has thrown all other issues aside, at least for the moment.   One thing is certain – the landscape next week will be different.  The world is still a troubled place and the choice of our next Commander in Chief (the most important Presidential role) should not take a back seat among those of us who served in uniform.  The intensity and persistence of our efforts to reach veterans and their families friends and neighbors must be maintained.

This past Wednesday afternoon our “Vets4McCain” office was packed and gave a rousing welcome to the Victory Bus Tour.  The bus carried a few of John McCain’s friends and colleagues who spoke eloquently and passionately about his character, integrity and capability to lead.  Although they were preaching to the choir it was great to see the enthusiasm and excitement of the audience.  We had plenty of media at the event and great coverage in TV News, the Pensacola News Journal and on talk radio (AM 1330, 1370, 1620).

Next Friday night (3 October) is Gallery Night.  It is a regular event where many downtown Pensacola businesses have open doors from 5 PM until 9 PM.  Our office will be open and we hope to see many of you stop and say hello.  The News Journal will contain more detail as the week unfolds.  We continue to be pleased by the number of folks that come by the office (8 Palafox Pl).  Our volunteers are doing a superb job of meeting and greeting and really enjoy the interaction.  Many, many vets come in and relate their personal stories.  It is inspiring to speak with these people who have given so much.

We would like for all of you to consider writing “letters to the editor” in the weeks remaining.  We should flood the papers with requests to publish your thoughts.  The papers are surely selective in choosing what to print, but certainly a percentage of their input make the paper.  Another avenue to actively pursue is news/radio talk shows.  Most in this area have a conservative bias and seem eager to let you on the air.  As veterans you have instant credibility on National Defense/ Commander in Chief Issue.  Don’t be shy!
