maxaGeorgia Senator Max Cleland Joins Nationwide Movement for Full Mandatory Funding of VA

On October 26th, during a veterans rally in upstate New York hosted by Eric Massa, candidate for Congress 29th District, Senator Max Cleland signed Operation Firing For Effect’s resolution for full mandatory funding of veteran’s healthcare. Cleland is the latest high profile American to endorse the full funding concept, joining the ranks of; Senator Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator John Edwards, and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. All of whom are/were 2008 Presidential candidates.

Senator Max Cleland’s resume’ reads like a novel of public service to his country. Severely wounded in Vietnam, highly decorated Captain Max Cleland lost both legs and one arm while serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1968. What would normally end the career of most people was merely the beginning of Max Cleland’s life as a public servant. Cleland served from 1971 to 1975 in the Georgia Senate, and became an advocate for affairs relating to veterans.

He was the administrator of the United States Veterans Administration under President Jimmy Carter, a fellow Georgian, from 1977 to 1981. He then served 14 years as Secretary of State of Georgia from 1982 to 1996, working closely with his future Senate colleague, Zell Miller. Cleland ran for the U.S. Senate in 1996 and won by just 30,000 votes over Republican Guy Millner.

According to Operation Firing For Effect’s National Chairman, Gene Simes, Cleland’s role as the head of the Veterans Adminastration gives him great insight into veterans’ healthcare and the full funding concept. “If anyone knows about what full mandatory funding would mean to our former military personnel and their families, it is Senator Max Cleland,” Simes states.

Sunday’s Veterans’ Rally was organized by a fellow veteran, Eric Massa. Massa is running for Congress in the 29th District with a very strong veteran’s affairs plank in his platform. During the rally Mr. Massa took the time to also sign OFFE’s resolution for full funding of veteran’s healthcare and services. Massa attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and went on to serve in the Navy for 24 years. This is Massa’s 2nd run for the Congressional seat, having lost a previous bid in 2006 by a narrow margin.
