A top Marine general sent a letter of condolence today to residents of the University City section of San Diego — a day after the release of a report blaming the F/A-18 crash that killed four people in the neighborhood on poor maintenance and human error.
Maj. Gen. Michael Lehnert said the Marine Corps will continue to provide financial assistance to homeowners and help them get counseling and file claims with the U.S. government. The Marines are working with the county Department of Environmental Health to clean up the crash site, Lehnert said.
“The Marine Corps regrets this sad and unfortunate accident,” Lehnert wrote. “We are committed to being good neighbors and ensuring the safety and well-being of our surrounding community.”
The Marine jet smashed into homes Dec. 8 while attempting an emergency landing at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Four members of the same family were killed: Young Mi Yoon, 36; daughters Grace, 15 months, and Rachel, 2 months; and Yoon’s mother Suk Im Kim, 60.
After an investigation, the Marines relieved four officers from duty and reprimanded eight Marines and a sailor. The pilot has been grounded, pending a review by Marine Corps headquarters.
