LAKEWOOD – Rep. Linda Sanchez has introduced legislation that would honor overlooked Vietnam veterans. The Lakewood Democrat’s bill would designate March 30 "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" in honor of soldiers and sailors snubbed when they returned from Southeast Asia in the 1960 s and 1970 s.
"With this legislation, we can help provide Vietnam veterans the heroes’ welcome they deserve, but that too many never received," Sánchez said in a prepared statement.
The date coincides witth March 30, 1973, when a cease-fire was arranged and combat troops began returning home. Despite the treaty, fighting continued and troops did not return until the war ended April 30, 1975, after the Fall of Saigon.
Sánchez began her work to honor Vietnam veterans in 2003, when she met with constituent Jose Ramos, a Vietnam veteran from Whittier who had sought recognition for his fellow veterans.
Sánchez introduced her bill in the 108 th, 109 th, and 110 th Congresses, but it failed to gain traction.
Whether the bill passes or not, Sanchez also plans to host a "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration" from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 29 at the California High School Football Field, 9800 S. Mills Ave., Whittier.
