WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today released the statement below following President Barack Obama’s announcement to strengthen health care services for our nation’s veterans and build a 21st century Department of Veterans Affairs (VA):
“Our government’s one sacred promise is to keep faith with those who have worn the uniform, and President Obama’s plan takes big steps forward in keeping that promise while dragging the system into the information age. A single electronic medical record for each soldier will ensure that health care for our veterans won’t be disrupted by bureaucratic hurdles as they transition from the military to the VA. It’s a step in the right direction and I look forward to working with the Obama administration in the future to ensure we deliver the care and resources our soldiers have earned.”
In response to the President’s call for improving the way we help veteran’s who have mental injuries or are facing homelessness, Kerry said, “Increasing mental health services and housing protections to prevent homelessness and provide relief during this mortgage crisis is the least we can do for those who have served our country.”
Earlier this month, Senator Kerry introduced the Military Families and Veterans Homes Protection Act of 2009 to strengthen protections against foreclosures and homelessness for active duty military service members and veterans
