DEBATE RAGES OVER ESCALATION OF WAR IN S.W. ASIA AND INCREASED DEFENSE SPENDING UNDER OBAMA.

Just at the point in his Presidency when one would think that most criticism and opposition to Obama administrations policies would come exclusively from the far-right and conservative Republicans in general, the administration appears to be embroiled in criticism, division, and debate within the progressive movement, meaning those voters who supported Obama and gave Democrats control of Congress. Debate, criticism, to outright opposition is coming from within the Progressive movement that gave America its first black President. This may not bode well for both the Democrats going into the November election cycle when voters can hardly tell the difference between grape and strawberry cool aid.

A side, or cautionary, note to far-right and ultra-conservative critics of the Obama administration, there is a vast difference between Obama bashing, and questioning, debating, and oppositing mostly Obama’s continuation of Bush foreign policies because they are either too Bush lite or more radical than what the Bush admin did. (WINK). Regardless, this is also a potential vulnerability for the progressive movement and Democratic politcal candidates who lean too far right going into the next election cycle after a spring and summer of Pro-Peace demonstations and grassroots activism.

Several grassroots organizations that were instrumental in getting Obama elected are now leading the charge in questioning and opposing plans to escalate the Bush war into Afghansitan, Pakistan, and beyond. With the exception of MoveON.org that has thus far remained silent on the issues surrounding Afghanistan, and VoteVets which has come out in strong defense and promotion of escalating war in S.W. Asia, most other progressive organizations are asking themselves the hard questions.

Voters for Peace, and True Majority have come out with debates and questions on Afghanistan if not outright opposition, and Robert Greenwood’s Brave New Films which gave the American voter such inside information as the Fiscal Cost of the Iraq War, and Defense Contractor Waste and Profit, has launched the Brave New Films Foundation in a grassroots effort to raise debate and promote opposition to escalaton of war in Afghanistan with his Retink Afghanistan Campaign.

Retink Afghanistan is gathering grassroots volunteers and workers from across the nation and producing a series of documentary films related to the downside of escalation of war in Afghanistan, especially the economic costs, in an attempt to better educate the voters going into the November elections and beyond.

When I signed up to be a Peacemaker, for "PEACE WAS ONCE MY PROFESSION," I was asked what question I would have for expert debaters on both sides of the issues surrouding escalation of the Afghanistan War, Dr. Lawrence Korb, a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor-in-chief of The Nation. ”

question1
The short and to the point question I
asked was, "Should the American people be
asked to seriously share in the sacrifice,
costs, and burden of war alongside our
troops or just continue sitting on the
sidelines and cheer? If share in our troops
sacrifice, in what ways?

If you have a short question to the point, especially as it relates to military families and our troops NOT what it will economically or politically cost the other 99% who cannot relate once we commit to Afghanistanam. Click the WHAT WOULD YOU ASK" Link and ask it

Most questions that I noted asked had nothing to do with how or what our troops or military families burden sharing would be nor even mentioned views of our troops our military families pro, con, or otherwise. The debate rages among those with nothing to lose. Come on now, we Veterans, troops, and military families can do better than that. This debate is really about us, so it is up to us to make it so.

Readers are more than welcome to use the articles I've posted on Veterans Today, I've had to take a break from VT as Veterans Issues and Peace Activism Editor and staff writer due to personal medical reasons in our military family that take away too much time needed to properly express future stories or respond to readers in a timely manner. My association with VT since its founding in 2004 has been a very rewarding experience for me. Retired from both the Air Force and Civil Service. Went in the regular Army at 17 during Vietnam (1968), stayed in the Army Reserve to complete my eight year commitment in 1976. Served in Air Defense Artillery, and a Mechanized Infantry Division (4MID) at Fort Carson, Co. Used the GI Bill to go to college, worked full time at the VA, and non-scholarship Air Force 2-Year ROTC program for prior service military. Commissioned in the Air Force in 1977. Served as a Military Intelligence Officer from 1977 to 1994. Upon retirement I entered retail drugstore management training with Safeway Drugs Stores in California. Retail Sales Management was not my cup of tea, so I applied my former U.S. Civil Service status with the VA to get my foot in the door at the Justice Department, and later Department of the Navy retiring with disability from the Civil Service in 2000. I've been with Veterans Today since the site originated. I'm now on the Editorial Board. I was also on the Editorial Board of Our Troops News Ladder another progressive leaning Veterans and Military Family news clearing house. I remain married for over 45 years. I am both a Vietnam Era and Gulf War Veteran. I served on Okinawa and Fort Carson, Colorado during Vietnam and in the Office of the Air Force Inspector General at Norton AFB, CA during Desert Storm. I retired from the Air Force in 1994 having worked on the Air Staff and Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon.
