 El Paso, Texas,

A Marine who finished boot camp in San Diego last month has lost his fight to wear his dress blue uniform at his high school graduation.

The school board in El Paso, Texas, voted 7-0 Tuesday night that all graduates must wear the traditional cap and gown _ rejecting a request by Pfc. Garrett Miles-McCarthy. The 18-year-old had finished his coursework in December and gone to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

The board voted to allow Miles-McCarthy and other active-duty military personnel to wear their uniforms during the presentation of colors and pledge of allegiance at the beginning of the graduation ceremony.

The El Paso Times reports that Marie McCarthy struggled to fight back tears as each school member expressed opposition to her son’s request.

Miles-McCarthy was not at the school board meeting, where petitions were presented on both sides of the issue. Instead, he reported Tuesday to Camp Pendleton for infantry training.
