A group of Wausau area Hmong veterans will travel to La Crosse on Thursday to participate in a ceremony honoring their service.
Coordinated by the Wisconsin Lao Veterans of America, the ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Freedom Park in La Crosse.
The event will feature an honor guard, a band and other commemorations, said Nao Shoua Xiong of Wausau, vice president of the state chapter of the Lao Veterans of America. Xiong was a lieutenant in the Hmong and Lao army led by Gen. Vang Pao. The CIA-backed army fought communist forces in Laos during the Vietnam War.
May 14 is a significant date for Hmong-Americans because that was the day in 1975 that Pao and many of his soldiers fled Laos for Thailand.
“This day is a very important day for us,” Xiong said. “ “We remember those lost in the war, too.”
The Wisconsin legislature designated the day as “Hmong-Lao Appreciation Day” in 2003.
People interested in learning more about or attending the La Crosse ceremony can call Xiong at 581-3991.
