HARTFORD, Conn.—More than 14,000 female military veterans living in Connecticut are being honored with a memorial at the state Capitol.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell and other state leaders unveiled the memorial sculpture Monday in the Veterans Alcove of the Capitol complex.

That area, located in a concourse between the Capitol and Legislative Office Building, houses flags and other memorials to veterans and military members who died in combat.

The three-dimensional sculpture is a replica of a 2,000-pound statue of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial on the Mall in Washington.

Connecticut Veterans Affairs Commissioner Linda Schwartz says about 16,000 female veterans live in the state, including more than 350 who are ages 90 and older.
