A not-for-profit website has recently come online, set up especially to record the stories of veterans of all wars, their families and friends. Its’ called Harvesting History. It’s at http://harvestinghistory.org
The software developer overseeing the site is an 82nd Airborne, OEF (Afghanistan) vet. In this "time capsule," visitors can deposit writing(blogs),videos(vlogs) photos, art, original music. There’s a sampler of videos already posted available on the home page.
The site sees itself as an online monument to the living, a small piece of immortality, dedicated to archiving memories, saluting service, connecting those who served, and preserving a living legacy.
The creators are a public interest media group called Groundswell, established in 1978.
Moviemaker and former NYU teacher Peter Barton has been developing a fiction screenplay about a group of disabled vets who form a springboard diving team to generate positive publicity for their rehab facility, which is scheduled for closing. They call their exhibition team the Brew Angels, after their favorite fuel. The story is a dark romantic comedy that features amputees, a blind guy, someone in a wheelchair going off the diving board, spreading their wings, taking flight, reclaiming futures they thought had been taken from them.
The project was designed to call attention to the struggles of wounded warriors, whose determined dedication reminded Barton of John Kennedy’s "ask not…", a call to service that inspired him in his youth.
While researching the fiction film, he met veterans whose stories he felt HAD to be told, and in their own words. So he created the website with the help of OEF veteran Mark Webster.
He recorded the videos already posted on the site, to "prime the pump."
He encourages any and all to visit, view, read, post.
