The former administrator of the State Veterans Nursing Home in Rifle has been indicted for felony theft and first-degree official misconduct.

The Colorado Department of Human Services said today that the former administrator, Robert Leslie Shaw, 55, was fired on Feb. 22 following an internal investigation by the department that began last September.

Shaw was placed on administrative leave on Sept. 22. Based on the finding of the internal audit, which indicated fraud may have taken place, the department requested that the Denver district attorney’s office investigate Shaw. On Jan. 7, the CDHS Field Audits Division filed the results of its investigation with the economic crimes unit of the Denver DA’s office.

The Denver grand jury returned the indictment late last month, charging Shaw with two counts of felony theft and one count of first-degree official misconduct, which is a misdemeanor. His first appearance in Denver District Court was this morning.

Karen L. Beye, executive director of the Colorado Human Services, said today that the department is dedicated to serving veterans. "The Department of Human Services takes very seriously our mission of caring for veterans in a quality and fiscally responsible manner and will always work to ensure that high standards of conduct are maintained," she said.
