The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter in Palestine awarded three scholarships as part of its memorial scholarship program, according to information from Allan Mayo, chapter president.

The scholarships of $1,000 each were established in memory of Vietnam veterans William David Bothwell, Ronald Scott Hayes and Jerry Jones, Mayo said.

The Jerry Jones Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Dannette Light, a senior at The University of Texas at Tyler who plans to be a teacher in the Westwood school district.

The William Bothwell Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kelli Lynn Bowman, a senior at Slocum High School who plans to major in child psychology at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The Ronald Hayes Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jesse Kyle Owens, a senior at Slocum High School who plans to attend Trinity Valley Community College and earn a degree in wildlife biology at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The scholarships were available to a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a Vietnam veteran from Anderson, Cherokee, Freestone, Houston, Leon or Limestone counties. Recipients were selected by the chapter’s scholarship committee after evaluating applications.

Mayo said providing the memorial scholarships to deserving youths is one way the chapter is able to help others.
