For the past ten years, I have been one of the main focus points by millions of Veterans, Active Duty Military, and their family and friends on Memorial Day. This is due to a little piece of writing I did ten years ago in my Nashville home and office at the head of Music Row. One day I was inspired to ask myself, "What is the meaning of Memorial Day?" This was because every Memorial Day I could remember revolved around ‘sales’ at different department stores, BBQs, party party party and play play play for the first 3 day weekend of the summers. That one moment of solitude, however, made me wonder if I was missing the point on this memorable day. A day that we ‘should’ respect those who have fought and died defending our country.
Last year, I was invited to attend a special Veterans Concert in Morton, IL. When I arrived, the producer of this gig met me at my motel and slapped a few pieces of paper into my hands. I looked down at them, and he had downloaded my "What Is The Meaning Of Memorial Day" from one of thousands of web sites that has it on them, and he said he wanted me to read it at the concert. I told him it was not a spoken piece, but a written piece. Larry Stimeling then told me that he was the producer of that gig, and I ‘would’ read it. So, I did.
As thousands of people gathered before me in an open, grassy park with The Moving Wall to my left, and American flags waving in front, and a helicopter to my right, and me standing on stage (my place in life), I began reading this piece I had written ten years earlier. As I was reading, something came over me and the audience. Spirits began swirling about and amongst us. The field became silent. No one person moved but stared at me listening to every word I uttered. When I was done, the audience applauded and applauded and applauded.
When you go to my web site, down in the lower left hand corner of my home page is the icon you can click on and for FREE listen to my "What Is The Meaning Of Memorial Day. And please feel free to share it with others. This is my way of wishing you and yours a very Happy Memorial Day, and hope you have a great summer.
And, word is out! On June 3rd I will be an official member of a Nashville radio station broadcasting for two hours every Wednesday night where I will be sharing the stage with the host of this program and presenting world wide some of the best music you’ll ever hear. So, go to my web site and get ‘tuned in’. All the information is there, and it is absolutely FREE.
And remember, Memorial Day is a special day. One needs to stop for a moment on this day and remember that freedom is not free……
PEACE,
