HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)  — More Connecticut veterans of a little-known Persian Gulf mission now will qualify for benefits.Lawmakers approved a bill expanding the recognized dates for Operation Earnest Will, in which the U.S. military guarded Kuwaiti tankers from Iranian attacks.

Current law recognizes the dates as Feb. 1, 1987 to July 23, 1987, and requires veterans to have served at least 90 consecutive days to qualify for benefits. The new bill conforms with federal regulations by expanding the timeframe to Aug. 1, 1990, and changes the requirement from consecutive days to cumulative.

Veterans can qualify for benefits such as tax exemptions, tuition waivers and other financial help. Connecticut officials say they do not yet know how many more will qualify for benefits.
