ARCADIA — The Rotary Club of Arcadia presented the fourth "Service Above Self" award Tuesday night at the Elks Club.

This year the award was given to the nine members of the DeSoto County Veterans Honor Guard. These men were recognized for their exemplary service to the community. The Veterans Honor Guard makes a presentation at the funerals of area veterans.

The nine Honor Guard members are Roger Bumgarner, commander of the American Legion Post K-11 in DeSoto County, Vice-Commander Ron Kocher, who is also a member of the VFW, Gary Carter, Charlie Gore, Joe McKenney, Russell Oberley, Bob Thomas, Carl Turner and Ron York.

Since 1992, this group of men has performed at more than 300 veterans’ funerals. They also perform in parades and make appearances at civic functions and local schools.

The "Service Above Self" award is given to those who go above and beyond in serving their community. The first award was given in 2006 to Adrian Cline, the DeSoto County Superintendent of Schools. In 2007, the award went to Judge Don T. Hall.

In 2008, the Rotary Club gave the award to three individuals: Sister Ann DeNicolo, the Rev. Theodore Hanus and the Rev. Ted Land, for their service after Hurricane Charley in 2004.
