READINESS: Operation is to verify ability to deploy planes, cargo, people.
An around-the-clock military inspection and readiness operation at Elmendorf Air Force Base this week will mean more flights and more noise for surrounding neighborhoods.
The inspection began Monday and will continue on a 24-hour basis through June 7, and include simulated bombings, loudspeaker communications and sirens as well as increased flight operations, base officials said in a written statement.
The first phase of the operation is intended to allow the Pacific Air Forces inspector general to validate the base’s "readiness and capability to deploy people, cargo and aircraft," the statement says. A second phase "will test the (3rd) Wing’s ability to survive and operate in a combat environment."
Col. Thomas Bergerson, commander of Elmendorf’s 3rd Wing, said the operation is likely to be noticed by the base’s neighbors. "While we want to minimize the impact on the local community, at times we will have a lot of activity going on during nighttime hours that are normally much quieter," Bergerson said. "We appreciate the community’s support as we provide the most realistic training possible for our airmen."All base members and visitors should expect longer than usual delays at base gates and facilities.
